Swede fest™ palm beach 5 is just FIVE DAYS AWAY!
Current politics, beloved box office hits, classic cinema – nothing is safe in this year’s line-up of lampoons. Celebrating a “fifth of a quarter of a century” of hilariously bad remakes of Hollywood hits, the underground festival takes place at the Kelsey Theater in Lake Park, with an entertainment-packed after party next door at the Brewhouse Gallery.
The wildly popular, sell-out event showcases laughably bad, 3 minute remakes of Hollywood hits made by amateur filmmakers throughout Palm Beach County. This year’s showcase of ‘bad films made by good people’ is presented by the Palm Beach Film Society on October 15 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at 700 Park Avenue, Lake Park.
But what is a “swede?” Based on the movie, Be Kind, Rewind, a “swede” is a no-budget, hilarious remake of a Hollywood film which spawned an underground sweding craze and resulted in the first swede fest™ in Fresno, Calif. Next came swede fest™ tampa bay, then swede fest™ palm beach in 2012.
Picture “Twister” filmed using balled up paper towels; “The Fast and the Furious” reenacted using children’s Big Wheels – these are only a few examples of the hundreds of films submitted the past four years. Perfect “short attention span theater,” each film is maxed out around 3 minutes, meaning that as “so-bad-it’s-good” as the film may be, another one is soon to appear.
The audience votes on the best/worst film made, which could win bragging rights for the future (or not) filmmaker, and one year membership for Larry Jordon training ($199 value) courtesy of the Thalo.com family of websites, for those looking to up their movie-making skills. Additional award prizes will also be given for individual epic-ness. The evening event will once again be emceed by the hilarious improv group Cheese & Crackers. Even if you don’t have a film submitted, seeing the filmmakers dressed in their versions of “Hollywood bizarre” is worth the admission price, which is a mere $12 per person in advance, or $15 at the door.
This year’s line-up includes:
- Star Wars: Phantom Menace
- Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
- Alice in Wonderland
- Birdassic World
- The Martian
- Willy Wonka
- Modern Karate Wars
- Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
- Mad Max: Fury Road

Grand prize is a one year membership for Larry Jordon training ($199 value) courtesy of the Thalo.com family of websites. Additional prizes will be awarded for individual epic-ness.
