Glory Days

Glory Days

Thought we’d remind you of the GREAT TIME we had last year at the very first SWEDE FEST™ PALM BEACH. The event sold out, 500 people showed up, we had almost 40 swedes to screen by filmmakers age 10 to 60, and the winning “Audience Favorite” film was a swede of THE HULK by Jonah and Noah Kalter (aged 10 and 11).

Killer surf during the "Point Break" swede shoot!

Now, just so you know, Jonah and Noah are swedeing again this year, so best bring your A game, Kubrick. And no, we won’t tell you what film they’re sweding. We’ll only tell you all the movies people have called dibs on. That’s it. So if those boys win again, it’s because their swede kicked your swede’s butt.

Stuff making an appearance at this year’s SWEDE FEST 2™ PALM BEACH:

  • Emcee Will Watkins, who will be conducting a live “Mystery Science Swede Theater 3000″ for your viewing pleasure.
  • The Audience Favorite Award — this year, the prize is video editing software!
  • Munchies from Oceana Coffee and Hollywood Cupcake.
  • Bevvies (both with and sans alcohol) by Potions in Motion.
  • Photographers AJ Shore and whoever they send from Florida Weekly (plus that way-cool step-and-repeat thingy).
  • Swag table by Yelp!
  • Camera crew shooting live video for New Vision Productions.
  • Wrap party at Cantina Laredo.

There will be more stuff to talk about as we get closer to July 27th. But all you really need to do right now is call dibs on your movie and get it to us by Tuesday, July 9 before 11:59 PM. Wanna know what movies you can’t swede? Here’s the latest list (most recent claims at the top)…

The Kalter brothers, winners of the 2012 Audience Favorite Award for their swede of "The Hulk"
The Kalter brothers, who could potentially win again in 2013…
  • Roman Holiday
  • Moby Dick
  • Mama
  • Life of Pi
  • The Avengers
  • Titanic
  • Little Shop of Horrors
  • Supertroopers
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
  • GoodFellas
  • Dark Knight Rises
  • Back to the Future
  • Alien
  • The Exorcist
  • Shrek
  • Edward Scissorhands
  • Tron
  • Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
  • Dead Man Down
  • The Shining
  • Starship Troopers
  • Ted
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
  • Ghost
  • Napoleon Dynamite
  • They Live
  • Point Break

Oh, and we should point out that there are EIGHT film in the Harry Potter oeuvre, meaning there are potentially eight Harry Potter swedes. Not that we’re encouraging that sort of insanity. There are four Alien movies, plus one prequel and two AVPs; six Star Wars movies…do you get where we’re going with this? All we care about is NOT having two swedes of the exact same film, people. And that whatever film you swede, you figure out a creative way to make your three minutes come in at a gentle PG-13, even if you source material is not. That means no nudity, f-bombs, or gratuitous violence. If the pre-teens can do it, so can you.

SWEDE FEST 2™ PALM BEACH is on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Borland Center for Performing Arts on Mainstreet at Midtown, which is bringing you this madness — and is getting quite the rep for cool events. Buy tickets NOW.

Over Two Dozen Titles You CAN’T Swede!

Over Two Dozen Titles You CAN’T Swede!

Here at the super secret headquarters of SWEDE FEST™ 2 PALM BEACH, we now have 24 films you CAN’T swede for our July 27th extravaganza. The roster this year is decidedly in the SciFi/Fantasy camp, with Drama, Romance, and Horror duking it out for second place.

May we present the latest list of upcoming swedes? They are:

  • Mama
  • The Avengers
  • Life of Pi
  • Little Shop of Horrors
  • Starship Troopers
  • Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
  • Tron
  • Alien
  • Back to the Future
  • They Live
  • Shrek
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
  • Dark Knight Rises
  • Edward Scissorhands
  • Titanic
  • Ghost
  • Ted
  • The Shining
  • The Exorcist
  • Supertroopers
  • Napoleon Dynamite
  • Point Break
  • Dead Man Down
  • Goodfellas

And since Napoleon Dynamite already looks like a swede, is it possible that swede of it will look slick and professional? Just asking.

We’re closing in on the submission deadline of July 9th at 11:59 PM. That’s not even a month from now! If you want to have a venue full of people reveling in your cinematic genius, you need to hop on top of things, Coppola. Submission guidelines are here. The rules are here. Last year’s swedes are here. You get two free tickets if you submit a swede, but if you just want to walk the red carpet, get your picture taken in front of the step-and-repeat, and sit in the comfy chairs, tickets are $5 in advance here, too.

SWEDE FEST™ 2 PALM BEACH is 7:00 PM on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at The Borland Center for Performing Arts on Mainstreet at Midtown, 4801 PGA Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens between I-95 and Florida’s Turnpike.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, July 9th at 11:59PM. The festival is on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 7:00PM at last year’s comfy venue (where every seat is a great set), The Borland Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are on sale here, and they’re $5 in advance, $8 in advance for a VIP Ticket that includes our highly coveted SF2PB lanyard. We’ll keep you updated on what films are reserved and unavailable for you to swede. If you have any aspirations (heh, now that’s pretty funny) toward making a swede for this year’s festival, reserve it now. Call for Entries Open: swede fest™ 2 palm beach

Call for Entries Open: swede fest™ 2 palm beach

It’s THAT time again! The Call for Entries is officially open for our second annual swede fest, boasting the ever-so-original name of SWEDE FEST™ 2 PALM BEACH. You can submit your entries until 11:59 PM on Tuesday, July 9, 2013. How? The bestest best way is via one of the many file-sharing sites like www.wetransfer.com or www.dropbox.com. Barring that, you can send us your 3-minutes-or-less epic on a DVD.

(Cue the sound of screeching brakes)

But wait, you cry! What are the rules? The fees? Who’s in charge? Where?

All of the answers are here, young Jedi. That’s the reason this website exists…

We’ll start at the beginning.

First, there was a little gem of a movie called Be Kind, Rewind. It starred Jack Black and Mos Def. The movie was kinda ho-hum, but it contained the seeds that would grow into a cult phenomenon. Yes, this film is responsible for the existence of the swede (n. laughably bad remake of a Hollywood film), and is therefore like a grandparent to the swede fest™. For a linear timeline, check out the “what’s a swede, man?‘ page.

Lest you think swede fest™ 2 palm beach is nothing more than an amateur free-for-all, we have RULES and SUBMISSION GUIDELINES. First, email us ASAP to reserve your film, because we only want one of everything. Once you reserve your movie, start roping in whoever you can to help with this little labor of love, because you’ll need a cast and a location — even if that turns out to be you, your BF, and your dog in the backyard. A little planning never hurt.

Keep your swede at under 3 minutes, and embrace the amateur nature of sweding. The bigger the original film’s budget and the less you spend on your swede are comedy gold, even if your source material is high drama. Your swede must be he equivalent of PG-13, even if you’re sweding Pulp Fiction. Find creative ways to work around any cussing, nekkidness, or other “grown up” stuff in the original movie, since swede fest™ 2 palm beach is open to all ages.

It’s free to enter a film in swede fest™ 2 palm beach. Tickets to the actual event on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 7:00 PM are $5 in advance online, and $6 at the door. If you enter a film, you receive two free tickets. Although it’s not a competition per se, the audience that night will vote for their favorite swede and we will award a prize.

Check out last year’s submissions on the “watch our swedes!” page of this site. Or check out the swedes produced for the 10 previous swede fests in Fresno.

We’ll keep you updated here, via Twitter and Facebook as movies are reserved and the entries start rolling in. swede fest™ 2 palm beach will take place again this year at The Borland Center for Performing Arts on Mainstreet at Midtown

A Tribute to SWEDE FEST™ PALM BEACH 2012

A Tribute to SWEDE FEST™ PALM BEACH 2012

Think of it as the swede of SWEDE FEST™ PALM BEACH 2012. Only there was never a big-budget original.

Okay, so the analogy doesn’t really work, but if you were at swede fest™ palm beach 2012, you’ll recall the crew that was recording all the action. The photographers. The screaming fans. The swede directors and their entourages. The pretty blonde sticking a mic in your face and asking you to yell out “SWEDE FEST PALM BEACH!”

Or not, if you ate too many Hollywood Cupcakes and had a few too many Potions in Motion and it’s all a head-pounding sugary blur.

And if you weren’t there, this 3-minute “ode to the swede” (produced by New Vision Productions) will make you feel like you’re right there on the pleasantly neutral carpet of the Borland Center for Performing Arts that fateful Friday night in August before the lights dimmed, everyone opened their programs and took out their ballots so they could vote for the “Audience Favorite Award” from Digital Domain, swedes began to roll, and the guys from The Jove Comedy Experience started heckling the audience in a brilliant reverse stand-up comedy move.

And it was all brought to you by Mainstreet at Midtown, which is much cooler that you thought, right?
